What should I do

If you ever feel scared at home, talk to someone you trust

If anyone is in danger, call the police on 000

Never get in the middle of a fight! Call someone else for help.

“I was scared of mum’s partner. I started getting in trouble at school. My teacher asked if I was okay. It felt good to tell someone who could help me.”
Hisako

“One of the things that helped me was talking to my friend. He said I wasn’t alone and we told his mum about it. It felt really good to let it out.”

Helping a Friend

“I knew my friend was upset and asked if everything was okay. She said her dad was hurting her mum. We talked and I suggested talking to our school counsellor”
Jackson

ASK IF THEY ARE OKAY

Let them know you’re there to talk. You could say, “Hey, you seem sad / angry, is everything okay?”

BELIEVE THEM

Show you believe them by saying something like, “I’m glad that you told me.”

ENCOURAGE THEM TO GET HELP

Your friend needs to talk to a grown-up they can trust and organisations that can help. You can help them have the conversation by showing them this site.

ASK IF YOU CAN TALK TO SOMEONE

If your friend is in danger, you need to tell someone. Say you’re worried and ask if you can talk to someone you trust. Say something like, “What’s happening is not okay. Can I talk to my mum about it? She could help.”

Take care of yourself

Knowing about family violence in a friend’s life can make you feel awful, it’s really upsetting. Find an adult or a service like Kids Helpline to talk about your feelings. You don’t have to go through this alone.
